Yesterday FarmVille released the new Wildlife Habitat feature.

This new building with purpose has several functions other than being a place to store your Wildlife animals and one of which is the ability to find Mystery Babies. You can read extensive details about FarmVille’s Wildlife Habitat in the FarmVille Freak Guide by clicking here.

FarmVille Freak Wildlife Habitat Guide

There seems to be some general confusion about Mystery Babies and we would like to take this opportunity to clear that up as well as answer a few FAQ about the Wildlife Habitat.

Mystery Babies

Basically there are two ways to get a Mystery Baby. One, you can harvest your Wildlife Habitat and “find” a Mystery Baby at the time of harvest. Mystery Babies that are found while harvesting your Wildlife Habitat will grow up to be the exact same animal of its parent that you had living in your habitat at the time of harvest. In other words, you cannot breed a brand new type of animal that you don’t own or isn’t already living in your habitat.

Secondly, Mystery Babies can be obtained from your FarmVille friends. Whenever your friends share their Mystery Babies via the Facebook News Feed you have the opportunity to “adopt” them. The animal that you adopt will be either a rare or common (see below).

Some Wildlife animals are only available from the FarmVille Market, and others are available through friends. To find out which animals are available from your FarmVille friends simply click on your Wildlife Habitat building and “Look Inside”.  Those Mystery Babies that are available from friends will have a small sunshine indicator that appears when you mouseover the animal with your cursor. You can “adopt” these Mystery Baby animals from neighbors who share them via the Facebook News Feed.

There are two types of Mystery Babies that you claim from friends:

1) Rare Mystery Babies: Rare Mystery Babies will have a Pink Baby Bundle and will include previous Limited Edition items that are worth less than 15 Farm Cash as well as Common Mystery Game prizes.

  • Rare Mystery Babies require 30 bags of Animal Feed to grow into an adult.

2) Common Mystery Babies: Common Mystery Babies will have a Green Baby Bundle and will include previous Farm Coin animals, Lonely animals (adoptables), and animals that were once Quest Rewards.

  • Common Mystery Babies require 10 bags of Animal Feed to grow into an adult.
Wildlife Habitat FAQ
(provided by Zynga via the Official FarmVille Forum)
Can I own more than one Wildlife Habitat? Yes! You can have multiple completed Wildlife Habitats on your farm. However, you are limited to having one incomplete (i.e., un-built) Wildlife Habitat frame at-a-time per farm.
How many animals does the Wildlife Habitat hold? Each Wildlife Habitat can hold up to 20 wildlife animals. Each additional Wildlife Habitat that you place on your farm can hold another 20 animals.
How long until the Wildlife Habitat is ready for harvest? The harvest cycle of the Wildlife Habitat is 24 hours, which begins as soon as a single animal is placed in the Habitat. The timer resets once you harvest a ready-to-harvest Habitat.

Does harvesting the Wildlife Habitat count towards Animal Mastery? Yes! The Wildlife Habitat provides an easy way to collect Animal Mastery from many wildlife animals at once with one click when the building is ready for harvest.
Do I need pairs of animals to be able to breed? No! Once you place a particular wildlife animal in a Habitat, upon harvesting the Habitat you’ll have a chance of finding a Mystery Baby that will grow up into an animal just like the one you placed in the building.
In other words, the Habitat can help you create multiples of the animals that you already own. This is a great way to help you accelerate your way to Animal Mastery; the more of a particular type of animal you own, the more quickly you can accumulate Mastery points for that animal!
Interested in acquiring wildlife animals you don’t already have? Be sure to claim Mystery Babies from your friends in the Newsfeed! These Mystery Babies can turn into a variety of different wildlife animals, and aren’t governed by the same rules that determine what your own Mystery Babies will become.
How can I increase my chances of finding a Mystery Baby upon harvesting the Wildlife Habitat? The more wildlife animals stored in the Habitat, the better your chances of finding a Mystery Baby when you harvest the Habitat!Where can I get more wildlife animals to place in the Habitat? Here are three ways to get your hands on more wildlife animals:

  1. When you harvest a Wildlife Habitat, you have a chance of finding a Mystery Baby that you can grow up into an adult wildlife animal!
  2. You can claim Mystery Babies shared by friends in the Newsfeed!
  3. You can purchase additional wildlife animals from the FarmVille Market. Click on a completed Wildlife Habitat on your farm select “Look Inside.” The animals available for you to purchase will be labeled with a “Market” button. Different sets of wildlife animals will be released in the Market over time.

How do Wildlife Mystery Babies grow up into wildlife animals? Give Animal Feed to your Mystery Baby to grow it up into an adult wildlife animal! Click a Mystery Baby on your farm and select “Feed baby” to give it Animal Feed. The Mystery Baby’s progress to adulthood (e.g., “1/10 Animal Feed”) will be indicated in text when you hover your cursor on top of a Mystery Baby.

How can I get more Animal Feed to give to my Mystery Babies? Your friends can send you Animal Feed. Ask them for help by clicking on a Mystery Baby on your farm and selecting “Ask for Feed”.

  • You can make Animal Feed in the Craftshop.
  • You can purchase Animal Feed in the Market.
Why are Mystery Babies different colors? There are two kinds of Mystery Babies: common Mystery Babies (with a green baby bundle) and rareMystery Babies (with a pink baby bundle). Common (green) Mystery Babies require 10 Animal Feed to grow up, and rare (pink) Mystery Babies require 30
The color of the baby bundle on a Mystery Baby hints at what the Mystery Baby will become when it grows up. You can see the possibilities for a particular Mystery Baby by first clicking on a completed Wildlife Habitat on your farm and selecting “Look Inside.” When you roll your cursor over an animal, the resulting tooltip will show you the type of Mystery baby (rare or common) that corresponds with that animal.
For animals that you don’t have, if the tooltip doesn’t show a Mystery Baby, then that Mystery Baby is not currently available to claim from your friends in the Newsfeed.
Mystery Babies: What is the difference between ones I find in my own Wildlife Habitat versus ones that I claim from friends in the Newsfeed? Mystery Babies that you find when you harvest your own Wildlife Habitat will grow up to be just like one of the animals in your Wildlife Habitat at the time of harvest. (Note: To qualify to create a Mystery Baby, a wildlife animal must be in the Habitat from before 10% harvest progress until the Habitat is harvested.)
Mystery Babies that you claim from your friends via the Newsfeed can turn into a variety of different animals. To find out what wildlife animals you might get when you claim a Mystery Animal from the Newsfeed: Click on a completed Wildlife Habitat on your farm select “Look Inside.” When you roll your cursor over an animal and the resulting tooltip features golden rays surrounding the Mystery Baby icon, then that animal is something you could get from a Mystery Baby claimed from the Newsfeed!Rare Mystery Babies claimed from the Newsfeed can grow up to become:

  1. Mystery Game “common” items (i.e., no uncommon or rare Mystery Game items are included)
  2. Animals that sell or have sold for less than 15 Farm Cash

Common Mystery Babies claimed from the feeds can grow up to become:

  1. Coin animals
  2. Quest rewards
  3. Animals from the Lonely Animal feature
Which animals can be placed in the Wildlife Habitat? All kinds of wildlife animals (except for babies, e.g. bear cubs) can be placed inside the Wildlife Habitat, including deer, frogs, porcupines, squirrels, reindeer, skunks, raccoons, opossums, and woodchucks. To see the full list of animals that can be placed inside the Wildlife Habitat, click on a completed Habitat on your farm and select “Look Inside,” where the full list of qualified animals will be displayed. Animals that are qualified for the Habitat but haven’t been placed in the Habitat will be slightly transparent. When you use an animal from your Gift Box or click on an animal on your farm to “move” it, the Wildlife Habitat will have a blue glow if that animal is qualified to be placed in the Habitat.

  1. Shelly Says:

I am already annoyed with this new feature. You have to place a baby animal to move on and it is taking forever for the new pen to be ready, and what happens when you harvest and get NO baby. Really annoying. I already am tired of it and it just started yesterday.

  2. Brenda Wilkes Says:

I must be missing something, eveyr post on my wall is sharing animal feed, no babies. (pink and green) So is this a Zynga glitch, or ???

  3. Deborah Says:

Hmm..well seeing as we already have the adult versions of the wildlife in the habitat, I’d rather keep them as babies so I’ve something different on the farm other than what I’ve already got, like the foals I’ve collected. :) And if they need that many feeds to grow, it’s doubtful that I’ll be getting enough of the feed to grow them to adulthood anyway. (As with the bottles for lambs, the watering cans for seedlings, the feed when it had been used for the mystery animals…) I am glad tho to have somewhere to put all those reindeers and bucks I’ve accumilated, any word on an expansion as with their other buildings? Cause you KNOW that 20 ain’t gonna cut it.. ;)

  4. Sandy Says:

Everytime I clicked on a friedns feeding trough it said…being discontinued but that they were giving me a reindeer and 5 bags of feed……i did this like 20 time and I got NOTHING. What happened??

  5. Kyle K Says:

I think this will help lots of farmers :) I know this helped me.

  6. barbara holford Says:

I THINK ALL THIS IS GREAT BUTTTT I CAN NOT GET IN MY FARM AND CAN NOT POST A THING I CAN NOT COLLECT A THING OFF OF MAIN FEED…….. SO THEREFOR I CAN NOT GET MY THINGS FOR QUEST OR BUY ANYMORE ANIMALS FOR FARM CASH ZYNGA……. PLEASE FIX

  7. Kara S Says:

How does one claim a mystery baby from the feed?

  8. hmmmm Says:

My animal feed trough just disappeared. Could have accidentally deleted it, or maybe a glitch? I looked to rebuy it in the market, but I didn’t see the option.

Anyone else have this happen? I’m not too worried; I really haven’t used it in a bit. Don’t really need more red chickens, elephants, reindeer or poncho llamas.

  9. Betty Johnson Says:

    This was very interesting.

  10. Dianne Says:

What is in the white bundle. You mentioned the other two, but not that one..thanks

  11. lindfa Says:

I think this is great except as usual they want and expect us to pay fv cash, that pisses me off big time. I am feeling that most of the time it is a waste of space, things just vanish and if you ask what is going on the pat answer is ” we are working on the problem, please be patient” while at the same time not wanting to give back the things that go missing etc.

  12. Skiks Says:

You don’t have to pay FC to get a good animal. Just find someone with rare cash animals and the baby you get off their feed will be random.

  13. Julie Says:

I just tested this whole thing out, so I’ll try to help as much as I can.

As long as you have a baby animal in the habitat, you have the possibility of getting a baby upon every harvest. Once you get a mystery baby, you can share it with friends. It takes 30 animal feed to grow a mystery baby into an animal. The baby will grow up to be exactly like his parent. However, the mystery baby received by the friend can grow up to be any of the animals shown on the habitat. :-) Which is pretty nice. So don’t go crazy spending your money, just have patience. I had a single Doe in my habitat, got a baby, shared it, a friend got the baby and it grew up to be a Golden Elk.

The only bad thing for neighbors is that once you fully grow an animal, you cannot share that animal like you would a tree once it grows from a mystery seedling.

The only way to get an animal is to feed a mystery baby 30 animal feed.

30 seems too much… but at the same time, I’d rather do that than pay actual farm cash for all those animals.

    I’m excited about this! :-D

  14. c Says:

can have more than one??? could have said sooner !

  15. Dana Says:

You state that the Habitat takes 24 hours… did you forget that FV has a 23 hour day or is the Habitat different from all other FV buildings?

And in reply to Hmmmm, the Feed Troughs are retired as soon as you click on them, FV gives you Feed and a Reindeer when they take away the building. The nice part is the footprint is very similar in size to the Habitat so you can put the Habitat on your Home Farm in that spot.

  16. nm Says:

Love the wild habitat and thank you for all the great info. I do wish though that all of my wild animals would be allowed in.

  17. nm Says:

@ # 8 Zygna took the Animal trough out of the game when they put the habitat out. It is no longer available they should have given you a message when you opened your game saying they were giving you a reindeer and some feed for your troubles.

  18. Sherry Norred Clemons Says:

Meh. Personally, I don’t see me using this feature much. Since the “babies” are only of the exact animals I place in the habitat…why bother. They should have made it that you get a level 2 animal from whatever is placed in the habitat.

  19. jksport Says:

Oh people stop your bitching. This is a good feature to the game. It takes no longer than anything else to complete. Once you are done you dont have to worry about it. Enjoy the game and master more animals!!!

  20. theresa Says:

great in theory, yet I’ve yet to get one animal from my habitat, other then the first initial one, and I’ve harvested mine 6 times since.

  21. Akatora Says:

I am just wondering, how many mystery babies you can share? I mean when you get one yourself and share it, how many friends are able to claim it? As I have seen 4 people clicking “like” button but sometimes just one click and all gone. (Or people just don’t tell they got one).
