Facebook to end notifications for applications including FarmVille

Posted on January 21, 2010 5:52 pm by FarmVille Freak FarmGoddess

You may have seen a Facebook announcement that appears above your FarmVille home page. The message prompts you to give FarmVille your email address so that you may receive notifications through there.

See picture of  announcement below:

Facebook FarmVille Notifications Announcement

What exactly does Facebook notifications include? To me, Facebook notifications are the pop-ups of notifcations (labeled as such) that you receive when something has happened such as “Ginger just fertilized your farm on FarmVille”. The notifications tab can be located on the bottom right of your Facebook screen. It is usually indicated by a red bubble that displays the count of active notifications.

This does NOT affect friend rewards, adoptables or other FarmVille items that you would post to your Facebook newsfeed.

Official word from Facebook blog:

“Starting today, you’ll have a new way to stay connected to your favorite applications on Facebook.

As we work to make the site as simple and efficient as possible, we’re giving you the opportunity to receive updates from applications in your email inbox, such as your MSN, Yahoo! or Gmail accounts, similar to how you may receive email notifications from Facebook when you’re tagged in a photo or receive a message. Note that you will have to explicitly grant developers the right to email you; they will never receive your email address without your expressed consent.

You can now use the rules and routing mechanisms of your email inbox to control how you communicate with applications. This email option is one of a number of upcoming changes we announced in October to give you a faster and more connected experience when interacting with external applications on Facebook. You will soon start to see dialog boxes on application pages from external developers asking you if you would like to receive communication about their applications through your primary email address.”

I didnt think FV ever had any “notifications” anyway >.< ??????

  2. Emmy Says:

I’m confused about what notifications they’re referring to. Is this the news feed posts where you see other users’ activities? Does anyone know?

  3. Stephan Says:

No way! That would totally suck! I want those notifications, but I don’t want to have to open 10.000 emails every day! =(

  4. FarminAintEasy Says:

Farmville abused its posting notifications just like they’re abusing us with ridiculously expensive FV cash only items! If they keep this up, I say we all strike until they quit being greedy.

  5. Tony Says:

I assumed all gifts, friend requets etc are notifications so everything you get on facebook gift wise etc I assume will be emailed thats what I think……………….

  6. farmgoddess Says:

@Emmy please read updated post, I’ve included a little more info. Thanks.

  7. MandiCandy Says:

cool! now that I read more, seems what I though “notifications” were, was correct.
Come to think of it…I think ive only seen them when someone places a “note sign” on my farm. This wont effect us much guys :) woot!

  8. farmergirl Says:

it’s that little “sign post” at the bottom of your right hand corner, next to facebook chat. in the next 30 days facebook will be getting rid of it, or at least the apps portion of it. remember when someone would get an egg, and the message would pop up , “john doe received an egg and offers thanks”. you won’t see those anymore. it also says things like, “john doe commented on your post” or “john doe likes your post”. those will be gone. zynga’s other games use them a lot, FV seems to have already cut back on “notifications”. so most of you probably won’t even notice. there are more changes to come though, including a “game” page. i think eventually we won’t be seeing posts from apps in the newsfeed.

  9. Michael_M Says:

Whew! The game would become OBSOLETE overnight if you could only receive golden eggs, etc. thru email..

  10. Em Says:

    I think it is a good move…

Posts are all i care about when it comes to farmville, notifications from apps were pointless.

but for crying out loud if you take something from a post be it egg, collectibles or adoption either like or comment so others can see how many people have been and taken.

  11. Tony Says:

this is really really confusing now to me as I would assume if you send gifts or friend requests that these are notifications.

So can someone can confirm before I decline or accept

GIFTS:- will they still come up on the top right corner with your friend requests as I would have thought these are notifications.

Message such as X has found a golden egg to share these will still go to news feed

I also use restuarnt city is it where the red button highlights red and says Fred has commented on your post or Fred has been to your cafe and helped out……….is that going!!!!!!!!! If it is just that I am fine with that and will say NO

Otherwise I will say YES and use another email account

  12. Tony Says:

I see now just that red button at bottom was useful to me when chatting with mates on posts so will not really effect farmville

    THANKS

  13. Blair Says:

I’m not giving them my authorization to use my email to post notifications to.

I’d bank money on it leading to more crap in my email down the road.

I bet Facebook will soon tell them to take the game requests out to cuz zynga sure likes to flood everyones walls. Those requests (animal adoption, eggs, barn raise etc…) should be in-game things anyways and not fill Facebook user wall pages.

I’d rather have those posts available to game players/neighbors only anyways and right now they are available to everyone.

So I hope Facebook slaps em again and tell them to put that in-game.

Ie: when you load the game zynga should have a page you hit first with all that info.

  14. Blair Says:

Do they have a TOS saying that your email isn’t going to be sold to a 3rd party?

They have to say “yes” they won’t otherwise it leaves it open for them to do so.

    Think about it.

  15. Jefferson Chaves Says:

To me it’s about Facebook’s feed. They want to send this be e-mail to ppl don’t open many windows of facebook.

  16. Tony Says:

Hrm i am no way pressing YES as I dont want loads of emails coming to me my ISP and email account holder would go beserk that when I open my emails there are thousands in it.

By the sounds of it now it is the red button in corner.

I do agree that Zygna should keep it inhouse so when on farmville.com that posts are posted for the game on there and not on facebook but links to facebook on who you know etc

  17. Em Says:

    101 FACEBOOK

If your calling it a news feed… it’s not a notification.

If your talking about neighbour requests and gift request that sit in the request section (top right hand side) then no it’s not a notification.

But if you are refering to the little sign that sit’s next to facebook chat that notifies you when you have a comment or feed you petville pet then yes my friend you have a notification.

  18. Rob Says:

I never get notifications from Farmville, it really shouldn’t affect you if you say no. The applications that I get notificaitons from are non Zynga – Tiki Farm, Fish World, Island Paradise, etc. Also Superpoke. It will be good not to get those notifications anymore, when I see that little square in my corner I’m hoping it means that someone has commented on my status or wrote something on my wall, so it’s disappointing when it is Island Paradise telling me that someone stole a coconut from my tree.

  19. Tony Says:

This is now confusing me again with someone saying its the news feed…..someone should explain this clearly what it really means

  20. Brenda Says:

That’s too bad—i like the notification option—it will suck when it is gone.

  21. Bobsun Says:

No link sharing, no notifications “really cool” whats next? :D

  22. Tone Says:

    Banner contest voting??? It’s 8 Central now…

  23. Jenna Says:

To be clear: Notifications are shown in the bottom right corner, a red number marking how many unread notifications you have. If you let the mouse cursor “float” over this little box/red number you will even see a descriptive text saying “notifications”. This is just rubbish and I strongly recommend everyone to say NO to all games wishing to send these notes to your email.

  24. Tony Says:

when is 24 by 24 coming!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Dragonfyre Says:

I stopped getting notifications that someone helped me out on my farm or fertilized my crops a couple months ago…and they’re talking about the red bubbles at the bottom right corner of your Facebook page…just not gonna bother with those, unless it affects stuff like posts for eggs and that…

  26. Rob Says:

You will still get notifications that are from people, just not from applications. It does not in any way affect your news feed or your live feed. The notifications are most definitely the little red box in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. If someone comments on your status, you will still get a notification about that. What you won’t get in the little red box are notifications that say “You have two new living sociat activities” or “So far you have added three new relatives, click here to add more relatives”. These types items will now come to you via email if you select “yes” while on that application. If you select “no”, you won’t receive any direct communication from these applications whatsoever (which I see as a good thing). The other thing to remember (because I think I saw someone above insinuate otherwise), that this is a Facebook change – not a Zynga change or a Farmville change – this is something that will be changing for all Facebook applications. I haven’t received a direct notification from Farmville in quite some time. I had mentioned above, incorrectly, that it was only non-Zynga applications. However, I just looked back through my notification history and I see notifications from Mafia Wars and Petville. It seems like you will have to say “yes” or “no” for each application that you visit. I wonder what the default will be for applications that we don’t actively use, hoping it’s a “no” – half of the applications are ones that I went to once to see what they were about and I never used them again. I’m too lazy to go back and block them, so I see the occasional notification in my little red box, easy enough just to brush over them, but will be better not to have them there at all.

  27. hart01 Says:

farmgoddess did you get the e-mail with the picture i sent today?

  28. anne Says:

mmm thought that was what they were talking about ,,, thanks Rob

  29. Nico Says:

When is the contest? It’s 7 PM Pacific.

  30. letty Says:

thanks ya’ll for clearing this up i was a little confused but now i get it, it seems that some people think that eventually they will be doing away with the posting too but that is going to far. non farmville friends have the option of hiding the posts from those of us that play so why would facebook try to totally take way the posts, this has to do with notifcations that i know i dont really pay attention to, the only time i look at it is when one of my friends made a comment about something i posted

  31. Jas Says:

if you don’t want to use your primary e-mail, make a new one on yahoo or something and use that! man, so many people sound like spoiled teenagers on here. i am going to start calling this country Victimerica! (disclosure – i am not anti-american. many americans are good hard working people who don’t even know they missed a golden egg), thank you.)

  32. Yaniv Sims Says:

Jas before you are starting slashing people here have you thought for a moment to check out the facts?

you can only recive notifications with the email you are regiestered on facebook so if it’s your primary one – you can’t change it.

so why don’t YOU stop sounding like a spoiled brat ?

  33. Emily Says:

    Thanks Rob, that was helpful.

  34. Farmer Says:

If you get a pop–up, just click on “Cancel” or the “X” in the upper right hand corner of the pop-up.
