FarmVille Requires Email Address To Play!

Posted on April 29, 2010 12:56 am by FarmVille Freak DarkFarmer

If you’re one of the players holding out on giving FarmVille your email, you soon may not be able to play! When a FarmVille freak logged into their account today, they were met with this notice.

FarmVille Requires Email Address

There is no option to skip, either the email must be given or you cannot continue on to play.

What do you think about this? What are your reasons for holding out on giving your email address?

  1. ADDICTED TO FARMVILLE Says:

thats been happening for ages now

  2. Jim Says:

First and I got this message. Not happy. May have to abandon.

  3. bolski Says:

it’s my body, i do what i want

  4. Ron Says:

Does it come with any privacy infringement issue?

  5. Jim Says:

That’s the whole screen you are presented with. Nothing more. Allow or Leave. Your choice.

I don’t want every game I play to send me tons of emails every time it deems something worthy of my attention has happened. I have the FV toolbar to tell me if a harvest is ready – that’s all the reminder I need.

  6. Tim Says:

really not worth complaining about, and abandoning… yeah because thats mature and shows them nothing… but to each their own, you don;t wanna play, don;t. It’ll only be you it affects.

  7. Jason Says:

The sad thing is…I offered them my email address long ago…to open my locked chest…but alas…no pass.

  8. Anony Says:

Aren’t there any ways to boycott Zynga?

BTW, if you click “change”, the email address will become a drop-down list. Pull it down and you will see something like “anonymous@proxy.xxxxx.com”. Choosing this and clicking “Allow” can let you enter the game while avoiding giving your address to Zynga.

  9. Lisa Says:

I am a pack rat/hoarder so I totally caved to get the pigeons towards the beginning. I don’t like receiving e-mails about games. It just collects until I go through and mass delete them. Most games require some e-mail in order to activate your account, but isn’t one benefit of playing FB apps that they already have all the info they need?

  10. Tim Says:

    thats mafia wars I think,

  11. bang Says:

not understood the reason for it being implimented NOW

  12. FVF1988 Says:

This is the stupidest **** I’ve ever seen coming from Zynga. First of all they already have the email from when I unlocked my locked chest so I suppose they won’t ask me again which would be annoying. But atlas I shall give in yet again if I am asked for it. Second, the email could always be given and then we can go into the actual emails and mark farmville as spam lmao. So we wouldn’t get all that build up of “you’re crops are ready” bullsh*t.

I love farmville, but I hate Zynga. :(

  13. Ex-fan Says:

Well, I won’t be playing any more. Your policy is disgusting. The reasons – you really expect us players to trust you when a pull a stunt like this?

  14. pipwizard Says:

oh my god i have given mine loads . Grr idiots um yeh ther is a privacy thing and u dont get many emails infact ive had bout 5 sofar

  15. Meh Says:

Why not just create a free account elsewhere and use that instead of moaning?

  16. Scolova Says:

Is anyone else being redirected to a ‘fake’ Farmville?
several of my neighbors have been taken to a fake FV apps that asks to be allowed!!!!

  17. Michael Says:

I just opened some Mystery boxes and received a Black Pig, Lil Yellow Wagon, Fancy Topiary, Jackfruit Tree, Stone Planter, and Small Mossrock. Are these new items?

  18. Pillan Says:

Can someone give me a quick answer…
Do we realy need to let them have our mail adress?
    Yes or now??

  19. Sembilan Says:

This is lame and so old.
BTW I got my first purple pony foal 2 hours ago! 09:41 a.m. CET.
Why don’t you write about that!
    It’s not unpublished anymore!

  20. Hell Says:

I registered on facebook 6 days ago in order to play farmville, and gave them my email address. Since then I have received 53 emails from the game. NOT fun…

  21. ice Says:

This is stupid, I don’t want to receive tons of unwanted emails from farmville.
I’m wondering if I should stop playing this game.

  22. FarmerBlobby Says:

The only reason they want your email address is so that they can get more publicity and players… For example if you decide you don’t want to play anymore, they think that by sending you these emails you might change your mind in the future and go back to Farmville! That’s just an example, but yeah I agree it is pointless, especially if they already have your email anyway!!

They may also use your email to send you information about new games like Treasure Island and keep pestering you to play them!

  23. berta Says:

    Maybe I’m naive …
But I hope it’s because they let us play FarmVille without Facebook in the future :-)

  24. Jennifer Says:

I find it annoying because I already get too many emails. I don’t want to be reminded to harvest my crops. I don’t want reminders and updates. I just want to go and play Farmville when the mood strikes me – it’s supposed to be a relaxation, not an obligation.

  25. Dom Says:

There was an option to use an anonymous email… I chose that one, but have no idea of the consequences.

  26. Not-anymore-player Says:

I’ve read several times, that Zynga sells our data, so I’m afraid of getting spam mails. I am very careful with my e-mail-adress, and I never got a single spam mail in my life. So I don’t want to risk something.
And they can’t just force me to give them my e-mail. I’m gone.

  27. Chris Schneider Says:

WAY TOO MANY POSTS for facebook to go to email. It was nothing to have 0ver 300 new e-mails, so I stopped it.

  28. thelma Says:

I don’t want to give mine because firstly, I think I still have the God given right to decide on my own whom I choose to share my personal info with? Secondly, I don’t want to be bogged down with xtra email or be solicited by them or whomever they sell my info to. And that they will, otherwise why be so persistent to invade my privacy?

  29. mlmscoots Says:

I might stop playing because of this. I don’t want tons of e-mail telling me something I’ll find out anyway when I play the game. I hate spam and I’m really thinking about quitting facebook altogether. Seems like the more they try to improve things, the worse it gets.

  30. Andrea Says:

The email thing is ridiculous. I will abandon FV if this policy does not change.

  31. Jay Says:

I made up an email just for facebook alone and have agreed for the games to notify me…so far I received maybe 4 since all of this email frenzy started.

just make up a yahoo, gmail (all free) account just for facebook only. you can always mark it as spam if you do not want to bother with it or not bother to check it at all.

  32. LoneGemini Says:

I believe this step is being enacted, due to the changes, FACEBOOK is making, not allowing games to use the feed for gifts, neighbor requests, etc. That’s also why the new “Message Center” for gifts/neighbor requests is now in FarmVille itself. The rumors on the blogs and such, is that it’s going to happen sometime soon after May 1st.
It’s really not that big of deal, or at least for me… I simply created a “special” Yahoo Mail account used ONLY for this… so it won’t affect my regular email!

  33. 129c Says:

Use a false e-mail address if your not bothered abnout all the notifications etc?

  34. No_One Says:

Well Guys if you still want to play farmville and you hate to received alot of email you have 2 choice … put farmville mail as spam in your mail or just play farmville on another msn wich you dont use normally … like me i use a msn for important thing and friend and another for game cuz of lot of mail they send that’s it that’s all … even i like farmville and im not too lazy to delete their mail so i accepted long time ago with my facebook stop crying and just watch how to adapt to continue to play. Happy Farming everyone =P

  35. Ryan Dejarme Says:

@farmgoddes…. HELP! SOS! my gift box which contains some of limited edition items which i left in there are gone…… i mean all of it…. and also my storage… i have 52 but it says i have none……. zynga….the farmville cash…… i worked hard for it……oh no!

am i the only one having trouble with this?

  36. Lola Says:

Farmville is pushing things a little bit with this email thing but as I gave mine long ago I really don’t care. If you don’t like it you’ve got several options. I have a friend that sends me more junk emails than farmville has yet. I simply search for them in my email folder, read through the subject lines and delete what I don’t want. It’s as simple as that.

  37. Rob Gould Says:

This is WAY OFF TOPIC…I just feed my dog treat to teach him the 4th day in the “fetch” trick.NOW IT SAYS COMING SOON??!!!
At the bottom of the pop up when you view the dogs progress there is this warning :’You’re dog won’t be ready to perform this trick for awhile but you can still train together!”
WTF IS THAT ABOUT??? IS THAT LAST TRICK NOT READY?

  38. Fantasy Kingdoms Says:

They do it because Facebook took away notifications. They have no way to re-engage/remind the customer that they are there – so it is killing the re-engagement of players (the infrequent players less than dedicated daily players). So it is hurting Zynga and other game developers. It is REALLY hurting small developers.

  39. Trish Says:

I believe LoneGemini has it right in post #13. The Email required is due to FaceBook wanting a lot of the game elements removed from FaceBook. However, none of y’all have mentioned that there are preferences you can check to determine which elements of the game you want to be notified of in an email. I’ve already done that. I don’t need to know everything little thing via an email. Also, another option is to have a yahoo or gmail or some other email account specifically for FarmVille. No biggee as far as I’m concerned. FaceBook wanting the games off FaceBook is what is driving this……have to say though that it’s sorta lonely playing the game directly on FarmVille. More than half the fun is chatting with friends during game play! Also, gifting moving “in-game” is another move made because of FaceBook. Remember, FaceBook and Zynga games are two separate companies.

  40. rej the greatz Says:

I don’t understand what that ZYnga do while announced and implemented this thing now. For me if my e-mail spam by updated news from Farmville it’s annoying.

  41. Karyn Says:

I forgot about that locked chest thing. I never received one. Yet somehow, two sets of carrier pigeons.

  42. Matthew F. Says:

It’s the first official social media suicide! Great job, Farmville…. you’re about to see the power of social media users; there are plenty of other games to play. Don’t try to make me follow your rules. Game OVER.

    - Matthew

  43. Lief Malone Says:

You guys should try Fantasy Kingdoms. It’s better than FV and the devs are responsive and actually care what their players think!

  44. Storm Says:

I certainly trust Zynga to not ever abuse my email. Or sell it when cash gets tight. Not a chance in hell i’m giving them my email to play their games.

  45. wendy Says:

I do not think it is unreasonable for them to have our email. If it is a problem with your real email, create one just for games. As long as they allow us to edit all the postings out of our email, and they only use it for contact with us for announcements, I have no issue giving them my email.

  46. EasyAnswer Says:

Just click on “Change” and choose to use an annonymous password. That’s It.

  47. EasyAnswer Says:

    I meant e-mail. Whoops!

  48. Em Says:

I have left my email in God knows how many places … just one more won’t kill me LOL. Though, I still wish it were a choice.

  49. PR Says:

I still can’t load my farm. Grrr.

  50. John Says:

I protect my email like crazy. I never get spam. Do I trust Zynga to keep it safe, never sell it in the future, etc? Not with the kind of business practices those bastards have resorted to. and I’m level 70 with 550,000 XP

  51. Beth Says:

I got this message while playing Treasure Isle. It refused to let me play until I gave up my email address. But even when I allowed my address the screen froze. I allowed my email address for FarmVille- and now I get annoying emails on my Blackberry at work.

I am busy- and I could care less that someone sent me a friggin’ doggie treat while I am at work. Some of us have lives!

  52. Kate Says:

Yes and no. Sure, I could just open another e-mail account for farmville. And then another and another … and so on for every stupid thing that bothers me. But also of these mail-accounts I’ll have to keep track, remember the passwords, remember that they exist at all. I don’t want countless internet adresses and identities, I want to be left in peace by all these stupid pesky notifications and subsequent spam (which always comes as a trail, no matter what they promise at first). If farmville requires an e-mail I’ll just have to quit.

  53. sea Says:

I gave my e-mail long time ago, but it still keeps asking it!

  54. Helena Dan Black Says:

spending 20 FARMCASH on anyone who has a link for a kelly green calf email me on facebook if you have one then tell me what you want and ill gift it to you

    facebook helena dan black

  55. Ethan Says:

Well, that’s it for me and Farmville! I’d been playing for just about a year (really since the very beginning) and was Level 61 with a farm I was really proud of.

I don’t want emails from Zynga or their advertising partners, and so until they change their policy, that’s the end of Farmville and Mafia Wars for me. I hope others stop playing, too, because your right to privacy is only important if you exercise it!

  56. Matt Says:

See ya farmville, nice whilst it lasted… but you’re not bullying me into giving you details…

  57. sarah Says:

Just got a No Crows sign in a mystery box.

  58. David Says:

I imagine Zynga will use this trick to collect millions of email addresses over the next few days, and then change it back so those of us who will never give it are not lost forever. Zynga is a truly evil company.

  59. Anna Says:

I don’t trust Zynga with my mail address. Not only will they spam me with “important” Farmville updates, or start pestering me if I stop playing – I also believe they will sell my email address to their advertising partners.

  60. Tony Says:

Can someone tell me is facebook down well not showing any feeds and/or farmville down

  61. hawk attack Says:

hey guys its not that big of a deal, all u have 2 do is change the settings for what stuff they email u. just uncheck everything and youll b fine. and is it really that hard to just press delete anyway?

  62. Its MY DATA! Says:

What idiots. its just a game. Its not important enough to give up my privacy for. They are such idiots, they will lose soooo many players because of this. Even if they change things in the future, why would I try to access Farmville if I thought I would have to give my email address. It really annoys me when companies try to take advantage. Stuff YOU, online WE are in control, NOT you. Who ever the investors are in Farmville, you’ve just lost a TON of money. Its so easy for people to get annoyed and move onto something else. See ya – I’m now an ex Farmviller!

    Wankers

  63. Action Jackson Says:

It looks like Zynga finally has decided on a business model. Look everyone, they need to make money to survive just as we do. By tracking your email address and behavior patterns they have enough demographic data to sell to doubleclick and other agencies for $$$.

Good for them for finally deciding on a business model.

Bad for us as they will make money by allowing others to annoy their customers.

What are you going to do?

  64. Lidd Says:

I am an avid privacy nut, but this doesn’t bother me. Honestly, so many places (including Farmville Freak), require an email address and you know they’re going to sell it. *shrug* When I get emails I don’t like, I block them. End of story.

  65. Brian Says:

Guess I will be done playing then….

  66. nikki kosta Says:

I found out yesterday, that to go on my farm, I had to give up my email address. There was no way around it. I give up my email address or I don’t play. Very simple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IS THIS THE NEW RULE, GIVE FARMVILLE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS OR YOU DON’T PLAY. CAN ANYONE RESPOND TO ME.

    THANKS.

  67. Jim Says:

    Yes, Nikki
This seems to be the new rule.
I’m not playing until they change it back, just because of the principle.

  68. tara Says:

i think zynga just did me a favor. i agree with earlier poster:

    GAME OVER

  69. John Says:

    Good Bye Zynga!

    Quote from CEO of Zynga:
“I knew that i wanted to control my destiny, so I knew I needed revenues, right, f**king, now. So I funded the company myself but I did every horrible thing in the book to, just to get revenues right away. I mean we gave our users poker chips if they downloaded this toolbar which was like, I dont know, I downloaded it once and couldn’t get rid of it. *laughs* We did anything possible just to just get revenues… So by the time we raised money we were profitable.”

I know I won’t give this corrupt company my email, nor my hard earned money.

  70. Ray Says:

For sure these email addresses are being sold in the market.. why do they need email addresses otherwise.. to send me notifications ???
    huh.

  71. Lise Says:

I took away me email permission ‘cos I was getting too many emails. they do that, that’s the end of FV for me. (may not be a such a bad thing after all. It’s taking a lot of my time!)

  72. cmc42 Says:

Well even here I have to type in my email address before posting.

Anyway the point is soon gift requests will only come via email so to me this makes sense.

Really worried about privacy? Set up another email account JUST for facebook. It’s not as though there aren’t plenty of free email provider services out there.

    Doesn’t bother me at all.

  73. Rick Says:

Thats it, no more FV for me…

  74. Mamie Says:

I’m sorry I don’t understand what all the whinny and bitches about they have been telling us about the email for months is it that you just don’t pay attention, It’s as plain as can be eaither you make a an email for the games or give them yours or just stop playing period stop with all the crying and do what you are gonna do period. I see alot of people want to blame it all on zynga when it facebook that wants the games off their site why don’t you be upset with them believe me I have some issues with zygna too but lets really look at who has wanted this for a while facebook. I mean they get you to join agree to let these games on their site get people to play them and then decide that they don’t want them anymore. When i first started on facebook it was to reconnect with old friends and I do keep in touch but not like everyday so i got into the games and it’s fun to chat and play say lets put blame where it belong facebook. But see the real problem here is people just like to whin and bitch and this is just something else for them to do that because what is wrong with this world is so many people don’t have anything else to do, but complain about other things!!!! Well I enjoy playing my games and will continue to play with or without you that want to quit you’re not hurting me any. If i feel anyone is doing this it is facebook and that is the one if I leave I would leave would be facebook. But i’m sure i’ll stay with them to keep in touch with old freinds.

  75. Brian Says:

    @Mamie

Its my email address I give it to who I want. Also, there is no reason for them to have my email address to play a game on FB.

  76. NotNicky Says:

It’s kind of annoying because I do get spammed with emails but at least I set it up so my Facebook email is one I don’t really use. I have another one that I use for important things such as school. I wouldn’t want my important emails getting lost in a bunch of FV notifications.

  77. Claudia Says:

@ 8 and 25 if you choose the anonymous which I did last night you’ll get the same request the next day asking for a email address……so you might as well give it or stop playing

  78. SuzieO Says:

I don’t understand how people can read these posts and still not get it. You don’t have to give them your REAL email address. You have your private one that you never give out and you create one for other things AND you won’t be bothered in your private account. Also, there are privacy setting on your wall where you can check what, if anything, you want emailed to you. What’s the problem? So much drama and the answer is right under your nose.

  79. dvfarmer Says:

I question exactly what Zynga intends to do with my email address… But irrespective, I do not need to be notified by a game of *anything*… I will play a game at my leisure, when I have the free time.

I have put up with Zynga’s dodgy practices for too long, but this finally crosses the line. So long Farmville.

  80. farmergirl Says:

the facebook i use for all my apps is totally fake, i can’t believe people use their real names, real email addresses. amazing.

  81. Farmer Daley Says:

o_o lol wats with all the complaints on getting emails? i signed up for emails like months ago and have not gotten one email from them (yes i used my real email address)

  82. Farmer Siff Says:

Hey all! Great Site! I’ve lurked around here for a while, but I must comment about this e-mail thing. I would like to use an alternate e-mail to give to Zynga (FarmVille), but this is disallowed. It is either your Facebook e-mail, some weird proxy option that is seemingly useless, or nothing. I don’t see why I should change my FB e-mail just because Zynga wants the actual FB e-mail. Then there’s this. Why has Zynga eliminated all the gifts and storage items from users? Is this only for those who are not e-mail compliant, or everyone? I’m sure some who paid FV Cash don’t appreciate losing items they had no additional room for on their all too small farms anyway. Feel free to agree or disagree with these points. Thanks. Farmer Siff.

  83. adriana Says:

Zynga invited me to place the Farmville bar…so I have all updates I need….don’t want needless mails everyday…won’t give my email to Zynga …rather quit if no other choice

  84. Herb Says:

No way. Bad move Zynga. I´m out!

  85. Andrew Says:

Well it was the last straw for me too, I’m out… and it feels good!

  86. Jim Says:

For all of you that say you aren’t getting a bunch of spam from having given zynga your email – have you seen what they are hiring for right now? Check this out. http://bit.ly/bkk2vS

Call me paranoid, but something doesn’t feel right about this.

  87. rbgfitsme Says:

I have 5 emails, I give out the one I never check to these sites.

  88. Tanya Says:

I’m not giving Zynga or any other appication my address…if Facebook wants them off, they should get rid of them and deal with people not coming to their site, because there are not apps. No one outside of facebook should need my email. Period.

  89. Mieke Kerremans Says:

    Zynga
this morning I was harvisting my cows and all are gone .
I want this back . I have pay for one cow 1.ooo.ooo for one Belted cow .
Now I have 19 you take al my two stalls from mine farm .

  90. Dave Nickasher Says:

    Not impressed

  91. claudine Says:

I want to quit e-mails messagges. Please do not sent e-mails anymore about farmville
